Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

IBS is classified as a “functional disorder,” meaning the symptoms’ cause is unidentifiable.

IBS affects the large intestine and causes abdominal bloating, cramping, and changes in bowel movements. Symptoms can vary—some of which include constipation while others include diarrhea. Some people will have both. While uncomfortable, IBS is a digestive disorder that will not cause problems with your intestines.

Women are twice as likely to be affected by this common disease. Because the IBS is a functional disorder, there is no test for it but your doctor may test you to rule out other diseases. Your doctor may

  • Test stool samples
  • Perform imaging tests
  • Take blood samples
  • Perform a colonoscopy

Symptoms can be managed with changes to diet, probiotics, medicine, and stress management. Dr. Farboud has been extensively trained in the management of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. IBS is one of his major areas of interests in the field of Gastroenterology.
